The St. John’s Prep hockey team has been good at times this season and has struggled on other occasions. On Saturday at Ristuccia Arena, the Eagles’ good side came out.The Prep completed a season sweep of BC High as Chris Cowles, Steve DiCarlo and Justin DiRienzo staked the Eagles to a 3-0 lead and an eventual 3-2 win over the defending Division 1A champion. The Prep (6-4-3) took a 1-0 lead at 8:15 of the first on Cowles’ 11th goal of the season, assisted by Dan Haugh and Ed Estey. Just under a minute later, DiCarlo scored on the power play to stake the Danvers-based Eagles to a 2-0 lead after one.DiRienzo’s goal, assisted by John Sokoloski and Derek Dubois, at 2:43 of the second gave the Prep a 3-0 lead. But BC didn’t fold as Brian Talbot and John Heffernan scored early in the third to shave the lead to a goal. That was all BC could get, though, as Kyle Pettoruto held the visiting Eagles at bay down the stretch to get the win for St. John’s, which hosts Catholic Memorial on Wednesday (8) at Salem State’s Rockett Arena.Lynn 8, Latin Academy 5At Connery Rink in Lynn, the Jets’ (6-5-2) offense was on display in this one as Lynn used four third-period goals to pull away from the visitors.Billy MacDaniel recorded a hat trick and Alex Bannikov had a pair of goals to lead the Jets. Sean Crowley, Jack Erekson and Bucky Surrette had a goal and an assist each with Steve Leighton and Eric Bransfield having two assists apiece. The game was tied, 3-3, after one period, and Lynn led 4-3 entering the third before Latin tied it. MacDaniel, Bannikov and Surrette then combined to score four goals in 7:56 to put the Jets up for good.Lynnfield 2, Newburyport 1At McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, the Pioneers (8-2-4, 7-2-2 Cape Ann League) avenged one of their two blemishes this season as Ryan Smith’s second goal of the game (his 14th of the year) with 1:59 left was the difference.”I don’t think we played our best, but that’s a credit to Newburyport,” Lynnfield coach Vin Mirasolo said. “We’re happy with where we are at, because we’re not close to playing our best hockey yet.”The Pioneers trailed 1-0 midway through the second after a goal from Newburyport’s Derek McCoy. But Smith got that one right back 65 seconds later, assisted by Mike Connolly and John Connolly. The game-winner came when a John Connolly rebound hit off the backboards and came right to Smith at the left post.Beverly 8, Salem 2At Rockett Arena in Salem, the Panthers (6-6-1, 5-5-1 NEC) finally got back in the win column as defenseman Alex Baker recorded four goals and two assists to lead the offense.Chris Bushey had a goal and three assists while Mike Boches had two goals and an assist. Connor Walsh added two assists.Fenwick 7, Marian 2At McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, the Crusaders (7-3-1, 4-1 Catholic Central League/Small) jumped out to a 5-0 lead and cruised to the win.Pat Doliber had a pair of goals and Steve Cleary had three assists for the Crusaders. Dale Crispin and Mark Sparaco had a goal and an assist with Chris Renzulli, Louie Williams and Jordan Mizioch also scoring goals.Gloucester 3, Danvers 1At Talbot Rink in Gloucester, the NEC North-leading Fishermen (10-1-1, 9-1-1) clinched a tournament berth with the victory. Andrew Fulford scored twice in the first period and added an assist on Marc Buotte’s third-period goal to offset a goal from Danvers’ Jay Sabino that tied the game at 1-1.St. Mary’s 6, St. Peter-Marian 1At Connery Rink, Zack Borowski and Jesse Powers each had a pair of goals for the Spartans (7-5-2). Frank McCormick had a strong game in net, turning away 17 shots.”(McCormick) was the backbone of this win for us,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “(McCormick) really kept us in it early, when it was a back-and-forth game.”Tommy Adams also had a strong performance with a goal and an assist. Mike Maccario added a pair of assists. The Spartans need four points in the final six games to clinch a tournament berth.Saugus 4, Winthrop 4At Saugus, with only 1.8 seconds remain
