Roundup: Saugus’ Guarente qualifies for national high jump

Saugus’ Matt Guarente qualified for the nationals in the high jump with a Northeastern Conference-best leap of 6-feet, six inches Wednesday in a 47-16 win over Winthrop at Beverly.Saugus coach Kevin Fontanella said Guarente hit 6-3 previously, but yesterday’s jump puts his among the top performances in the state this season. Guarente also won the mile. The Schesm also had wins from Patrick Finnegan, the 300 (37.6), Corey Ladderbush, 600 (1:39.2); Matthew Bono, 2-mile (11:05) and Jason Guarente, the 1,000 (2:33). Jason Guarente also took second in the high jump (6-2). Saugus is 3-4.Mhead 49, Swampscott 37At Marblehead, six first place finishes for the Magicians helped to claim the win over the rival Big Blue. For Marblehead (5-2) Jacob Evanter won in the 55 hurdles (8.3) and Mike Sahagian won the 55 (6.8), both of whom finished the season with an undefeated record. Also winning for Marblehead was Dan November, 600 (1:30.5); Andrew Graf, 1000 (2:51.3); and Tucker Reese, 2 mile (10:59); Jason Stockwell, high jump (5-3).In the loss for Swampscott, the individual winners were James Payen, shot put (36-3.1); Spencer Shonio, 300 (38.7); Chris Heller, mile (4:44).Beverly 61, Salem 24At Beverly, the Panthers had wins from Tom Mahoney, high jump (6-0); Juan Moran, shot put (39-10); Kyle Mooney, 50 hurdles (7.2); Sean Deady, 300 (35.6); Tom Lang, 1,000, (2:40.2); Brad Olson, mile (4:49.5) and Windy Henry, 2-mile (11:36.1). Salem’s MacKenzie Ryan won the 50 (6.0).GIRLS TRACKM’head 45, Swampscott 41At Marblehead, the Magicians needed to win the final event to pull out the win and they did. Swampscott led 41-40 heading into the relay, but the Marblehead’s Juliette Monroe, Sarah Bitterman, Katherine Slattery and Mary Kerouack combined for the win (4:24.2).Marblehead (5-2) also had individual winners of Slattery, 55 hurdles (9.1); Kerouack, 300 (4:24); Jess Sasso, 55 (7.8). Swampscott had wins from Kelly McHugh, high jump (5-1); Kelly Walton, shot put (25-4 3/4) and 1,000 (3:23.5); ; Skylar Sabbag, 600 (1:48.4); Amelia Antrim, mile (5:56.5) and Lindsay Walsh, 2-mile (12:18). The meet was at Marblehead.Saugus 45, Winthrop 35At Beverly, the Sachems (4-3) got the job done with wins by Alyssa Williamson, high jump (4-7); Elizabeth Shaw, 50 (8.8); Janelle Bean, 600 (1:35); Rose Karshis, 1,000 (3:19.3); and Erin Donahue, mile (5:47.4).
