School Roundup: Marblehead earns NEC title with win over Danvers

The Marblehead High swim team captured the Northeastern Conference title Thursday with a 58-41 win over Danvers at the Danvers YMCA.Both teams were undefeated going into the meet, but the Magicians, buoyed by a large contingent of seniors, had the right stuff. They finish the regular season 8-0.”It was awesome,” Marblehead coach Susan Guertin said. “I have a great team. I’m graduating 15 seniors. It’s been four wonderful years.”Caroline Belli, Ted Millett and Katherine Foley were double winners with Belli taking first in the 200 IM (2:14.62) and the 100 back (1:01.84); Foley in the 200 free (2:04.62) and the 100 butterfly; and Millett in the 100 free (52.11) and the 100 breaststroke (1:03.08). Haley Robb won diving (182.1) and Jessica Merrick, the 500 free.Marblehead also won three relays. Chris Argiros, Millett, Trevor Burd and David Traynor won the 200-medley relay (1:53.46); Argiros, Taylor Wright, Traynor and Millett, the 200-free relay (1:46.57); and Suzanne Foley, Catherine Rafferty-Millett, Caroline Caliri and Belli, the 400 free relay.English 84, Revere 83At Tech, the Bulldogs pulled this one out in the final relay (400 free) to pick up their first win (1-7). Emily Horton, Mark D’Entremont, Lysandra Fiskatoris and Cody Farris combined for the win with a time of 5:13.Will Segal won diving with 163.20 points and the 100 breaststroke (1:25.57). Farris won the 200 IM (2:45.70) and the 100 fly (1:16.28) and Fiskatoris took home first in the 500 free (7:23). D’Entremont also had two key second place finishes, one in the 500 free and the other in the 50 free.Swampscott 112, Classical 72At the Jewish Community Center in Marblehead, the Big Blue (6-2) got a lift from double winners Sam Andler, who took first in the 200 free (2:14.66) and the 100 fly (1:01.16), and Stepan Gevorgyan, first in the 50 free (25.49) and the 100 free (56.44).Omri Bernstein won the 100 back (1:09.29) and Drew Connors, the 100 breaststroke (1:20.68). Bernstein, Connors, Andler and Gevorgyan won the 200 medley relay (1:41.78).Classical (2-6) had wins from Peter Rondeau in the 200 IM (2:41.21); Tia Murkison, diving (233.20); and Katelyn Kidney, 500 free (5:36.69). Chris Voyiagis qualified for the states in diving with 189.20 points (second place) and Jeremy Dorson, Eric Silva, Tom Schumann and Jessica Bashore all has solid performances in their respective events.WRESTLINGLynnfield 39, Pentucket 30At Pentucket, the Pioneers led 33-30 heading into the final match. The winner-take-all situation didn’t fluster C.J. Venuto, who not only won at 125 pounds, but did it by pin. Lynnfield’s other wins came from Mike Doherty (103), Chris DiPietro (112); Ryan Visconti (130); Tino Acierno (140); Kevin Schwartz (145); Chris Klove (171); and Jake Donaldson (285 pounds). This was Lynnfield’s ninth consecutive dual meet win. The Pioneers compete in the Cape Ann League meet Saturday at Wilmington.GYMNASTICSPeabody 135.65, Marblehead 134.7At the Marblehead YMCA, Marblehead’s Morgan Pickett won all-around (36.75) and took first on the beam (9.7) and in floor (9.95), but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Tanners (4-4). Pickett also finished second on the bars (9.0) and in vaulting (8.5).Jen Habeeb was the difference for the Tanners (4-4). She took second in the all-around (35.35), bars (8.6), beam (9.3) and floor (9.25). Justine Jarnagin took first in the bars (9.15) and third in all-around, the beam and floor. Kaitlyn Anderson won vaulting (8.6).TRACKIn Northeastern Conference boys track at Peabody, the Tanners defeated Classical, 84-2, and Gloucester defeated Danvers, 58-28. In girls action, Peabody defeated Classical, 82-4, and Danvers topped Gloucester, 65-21.
