The Tech football team put the 2007 season to rest Tuesday with its awards banquet at the Tiger’s Den at Tech. The Tigers finished 6-3, and at one point early in the season, they ran off five straight wins. They wrapped up the campaign with a win over St. Mary’s the night before Thanksgiving.Although he didn’t announce it during the dinner, coach Gary Sverker said he does plan to return as head coach next fall. Sverker retired from his teaching job at Tech after the season was over and took a few months to decide whether he would return to the football position.”I have some good kids coming back,” Sverker said. “These three captains (elect) are really good kids.”Sverker said the reason he’s coming back is simple. He enjoys what he does.”I enjoy football. I really do. It’s been my life. I couldn’t see myself not coaching. I just enjoy it,” he said. The captains-elect Sverker was referring to are James Bazile, Anthony Gallo and Lorenzo Rivera.Tech senior quarterback Jose Rios took home the Most Valuable Player Award and John Jones, who goes down in the books as the first player to score a touchdown at the new Manning Field, was named Offensive Player of the Year. Elijah Good-Morris took home Defensive Player of the Year honors. Matt Lawless and Erichson Seang received Coaches Awards; Richard Contreras took home the Offensive Lineman Award; and Lorenzo Rivera received the Defensive Lineman Award.Freshmen awards went to Ramon Ramos, MVP back, and Josh Cheever, MVP lineman.
