SALEM – An Essex County grand jury has indicted two Peabody men on separate cases involving attempted robbery and robbery crimes.Stephen Sharry, 51, of 2 Hoover Ave., stands charged with unarmed robbery in connection with the Dec. 31 holdup of the CVS Pharmacy on Lowell Street in Peabody. It was shortly before 5 p.m., when a man, later identified as Sharry, walked into the pharmacy, approached the pharmacist and demanded money, saying he had a handgun in his pocket. He didn’t get any cash, but managed to grab a bottle of cough syrup before fleeing from the store on foot.Police responding to the scene arrested Sharry nearby on Bourbon Street. A tube of toothpaste was apparently found in his pocket.Authorities believe the toothpaste was the bulge he had in his pocket, which he indicated to the pharmacist was a gun.Sharry remains held in lieu of $10,000 cash bail at the Middleton Jail pending his re-arraignment in Superior Court.A conviction on the charge could send Sharry to prison for life.Assistant District Attorney Marsha H. Slingerland is prosecuting the case for the commonwealth. Also indicted was:Carlos Vieira, 29, of 2 Esquire Circle, Apt. 1, who is charged with armed assault with intent to rob stemming from an incident in Salem on Howard Street when he allegedly tried to rob a 53-year-old man at gunpoint.Indictments are a legal formality that allows a case to be transferred from District Court to Superior Court, allowing for a more severe punishment.
