Swimming Roundup: Marblehead girls excel in state sectionals

The Marblehead girls finished second to Wayland Saturday in the MIAA state swimming sectionals.”The girls were incredible,” said coach Sue Guerton, whose team topped the Northeastern Conference this year, and whose boys and girls won the individual crowns at the league meet. “It was nip and tuck the whole meet.”Caroline Belli won the 200 IM (2:10.95, a school record) and the backstroke (58.95). Caroline Caliri won the 100 free (54.25).Marblehead also had winners in the medley relay (Caliri, Belli, Katherine Foley, Catherine Rafferty-Millett, 1:52.15) and the 400 free relay (Belli, Suzanne Foley, Rafferty-Millett and Caliri, 3:42.67).Also standing out in the girls sectionals Saturday was Classical’s Katelyn Kidney, who was third in the 200 freestyle with a 1:58.18; and was second in the 500 free (5:20.27, which was 11 seconds faster than her previous best time).MarbleheadTed Millett was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.84) and seventh in 200 IM (2:03.87). The medley relay was 12th (Chris Argiros, Millett, Trevor Burt and David Traynor, 1:48.58).ClassicalThe team of Jetta Garrity, Mary Champigny and Kelsey Ylonen placed second in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.Lynn TechDiver Marcos Castellano was 18th, but will qualify for the states off his previous performances.St. Mary’sEmily Olson swam the 200 IM in 2:26.07 and the breaststroke in 1:15.93. The relay team of Olson, Veronica Collard, Kathleen Cliffe and Felicia Ruano competed in the 200 free (1:57.92) and 200 IM relay (2:20.02).SwampscottThe Big Blue entered two relay teams: 200 medley (Reegan Hourihan, Elizabeth Drummond, Elyse Knops and Paige Nahirny, 2:15.08) and the 200 free (Nahirny, Drummond, Hourihan, Michaela Vernava, 1:58.97).Bishop FenwickIn the girls sectional, Christine Law swam the 200 IM in 1:25 and the free in 6:02.28. Carling Audette, Candace Ferry, Judith Theriault and Law swam the 200 medley relay in 2:17.01 and the free relay in 2:00.08.For the boys, James Black was 10th in the 50 free with a 22.90 and 15th in the backstroke with a 59.25. He qualified for the states.PeabodyFor the girls, Katie Jwanowski, Rebecca Mullen, Katie Fitzgerald and Molly McCormick swam the 200 medley relay in 2:21.29; McCormick, Jwanowski, Jen Comeau and Fitzgerald did the 200 free relay in 2:02.50; and Brittani Atkinson, Nicole Stantial, Rachael Mullen and Fitzgerald swam a 4:18.15 in the 400 free relay.Atkinson swam the 500 free in 6:02.05.For the boys, diver Steve Maruzzi scored a 215.3 to qualify for the states.
