ESPN radio recognizes cancer survivor

MARBLEHEAD-890 ESPN Radio and JN Phillips Glass recently announced that Sara Smith of Marblehead was selected as “The JN Phillips Quality Performer of the Month” for January. The promotion is designed to recognize individuals who are making a difference in their local communities. Each month, 890 ESPN and JN Phillips seek out nominations from the station’s listeners to identify local individuals who have found the respect of others in their community. These individuals have made a mark in some magnanimous way in their chosen vocation or profession, or have done something significant to make things better for others around them. They are individuals who inspire others, but perhaps, until now, have gone unrecognized publicly. They have demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication or perseverance that has made an impact within a select community. Sara was nominated by her husband, Adam Smith.”Sara has had to endure six cancer surgeries over the past three years: 3 breast, 2 brain, and one ovarian after she was diagnosed less than one week after our engagement three years ago,” Adam Smith wrote in his nomination letter. “Rather than give in to the disease, she instead chose to kick it in the tail n taking whatever steps she had to, including chemo for three months and all sorts of radiation to work her way back towards health. Together, we founded the Breast Friends Foundation where we organize an annual walk to raise funds for those in need. So far, we have done two walks, raising over $37,000 for both cancer research and for three Massachusetts General Hospital clinics that provide mammograms and follow up treatment for low-income women who would otherwise be unable to afford these critical services. Sara took an awful event in her life and turned it completely around. By raising awareness and creating the foundation, she has turned it into a wonderful thing that is now a part of our North Shore community’s fabric. For these selfless acts, I nominate her. “Sara’s courageous efforts on behalf of those in need have earned her well-deserved recognition as “JN Phillips Quality Performer of the Month” for January. As an award winner, Sara received a plaque from JN Phillips and ESPN Radio 890AM and will be eligible for a random drawing to win a trip to the ESPY Awards in California later this year.To learn more about Adam and Sara’s efforts and Sara’s story, visit www.breastfriendsfoundation.org.
