LYNN – A fire in the basement of Salvy The Florist at 181 Broadway caused approximately $10,000 worth of damage on Wednesday, fire officials said.At about 9:50 a.m., firefighters responded to a working fire in the basement of the business. According to Lynn Fire Investigator Lt. Dave Legere, the fire began after an oil burner ignited papers that fell on the floor. The florist is a family business of Salvy Migliaccio, former President of the Lynn City Council.Apparently a woman was heading into the basement when she fell and tripped down the stairs, dropping a stack of papers all over the floor. She got up and walked upstairs to check herself out because she had hit her head, officials said. However, the papers were still on the floor and caught fire when an oil burner turned on.The fire spread across the floor, up a wall and into an electrical system, shorting out power and phone service, Legere said.Legere estimated the florist would be closed for one or two days.
