SAUGUS – The rumors that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the state’s Inspector General Office are conducting an investigation in town are true.Town Manager Andrew Bisignani said Tuesday he has been asked to supply information regarding the purchase of town-owned vehicles and Chapter 90 funds, which is state Highway Department money used for roadways and things pertaining to roadway work.”It’s all unfolded over the last couple of days,” Bisignani said. “We’re putting it all together and will forward them the information.”While Bisignani said the events have unfolded over the last few days rumors regarding an investigation have been circulating for weeks.Selectman Peter Rossetti said it seemed to be common knowledge that an investigation was going on, but he was unclear of its aim.”What the investigation will show I don’t think anyone knows,” he said. “Does it have some sort of focus? It seems to be on Chapter 90 money but it’s all kind of vague.”Town Moderator Robert Long also acknowledged that an investigation into town affairs seemed well underway. Long said he has not been questioned by authorities, but he has spoken to at least one person who has. He said he has also heard from reliable sources that others in Town Hall have been interviewed.Long, however, declined to elaborate on the discussions.”What the depth and breadth of this is I have no idea,” he said. “I’m not privy to that information.”Long said it was his understanding that Department of Public Works personnel have been questioned and investigators spent several hours on a recent Friday at Town Hall.”But no one has quizzed me,” he quipped.Rossetti was quick to say that the investigation may turn out to be nothing.”The fact they are looking doesn’t indicate there is an issue,” he said. “I expect we’ll be hearing more about it soon.”The problem, Long said, is even if the investigation does turn up nothing, it isn’t likely a report will be issued to say so.”Even if nothing comes of it the shadow will be there,” Long said. “I just wonder is this just a grass fire or is the whole building on fire.”
