LYNN – A Lynn man died from gunshot wounds following a pre-dawn St. Patrick’s Day standoff with a State Police special tactics team near Brookvale Street.Robert Mangiafico, 37, 27 Woodman St., was pronounced dead at Union Hospital shortly after 5 a.m.The violence unfolded at approximately 9 p.m. Sunday when Lynn police were dispatched to the scene of what witnesses described as a serious domestic attack.When police arrived at the Woodman Street address, the handgun-wielding suspect had already fled. Police soon spotted Mangiafico on foot near Center Street. A chase ensued, leading toward Tacoma Street where Mangiafico ducked into a driveway.”The man displayed a handgun and threatened to harm himself. Lynn Police secured the area and evacuated homes in the immediate vicinity,” said Steve O’Connell, spokesman for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.O’Connell added that city police attempted for the next two hours to negotiate with the man, hoping to convince him to lay down the gun.When those efforts failed, Lynn police requested a State Police special tactics team, which arrived at approximately 11:30 p.m.”For the next 5 1/2 hours they attempted to negotiate with the man, and utilized several non-lethal techniques to try to resolve the situation peacefully. During that time he made several threatening gestures toward police,” Blodgett said.According to the county prosecutor, shots were fired at 5:07 a.m. Monday. The suspect was taken to Union Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m.An autopsy was scheduled for today at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Boston. The investigation is ongoing.Lynn Police spokesman Lt. David Brown declined to say whether the suspect fired his weapon first, or at all, nor would he elaborate on the non-lethal weapons used by the state troopers.
