Salem State Roundup: Gaudet leads men’s lacrosse to victory

Greg Gaudet of Lynn posed his second collegiate win in as many starts. The Classical High graduate stopped 15 shots to help the Salem State College men’s lacrosse team to a 9-4 win over the University of Southern Maine Tuesday at Alumni Field.The Vikings (4-1) had two players with two goals each – senior middie Scott Aronian and sophomore middie Luke Metra. Ross Arnold of Salem had five assists.Salem State also had single tallies from sophomore attackman Justin Jones of Danvers, junior middie Alex Verity, freshman James Cross of Beverly, sophomore middie Mike Carpenito and sophomore attackman Logan Godfrey. USM (1-3) received goals from Preston Gilbert, Chris Gassman, Matt Soule and Shane Billings.SOFTBALLThe Lady Vikings scored 12 runs on 10 hits en route to a non-conference mercy rule victory over the Hawks of Becker College in the season home-opener Tuesday at Alumni Field.SSC (6-7) received a solid performance on the hill from freshman right hander Krystal Coleman of Chelmsford, who struck out nine in the five inning contest. Both of Becker’s runs were unearned after SSC committed a pair of errors in the third inning. Junior outfielder Lakisha Leach (Attleboro) knocked in both runs for the Hawks (0-1) with a two-run single.The Lady Vikings erased a brief 2-1 deficit by scoring five runs on three hits in the third and six runs on five hits in the fourth. The big blows came off the bats of freshman outfielder Taylor Orlando (Danvers), a two-run single; sophomore outfielder Jess Baird (Worcester), a two-run double; and senior outfielder Sarah Funk, a two-run single. Orlando added a fourth inning RBI triple while Funk finished 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and two runs scored. Sophomore Katie Oram (Lynn) contributed an RBI single as did freshman Lauren Concannon (Everett).SSC’s next games will be Wednesday, March 26 when the Lady Vikings host UMass Boston for a 3:00 pm non-conference doubleheader at Alumni FieldTRACKSenior Abby DeAngelo (Lowell) and junior Shawna Kennedy (Quincy) posted qualifying times for the New England Championships at the season-opening Northeastern University Spring Open Meet held in Dedham.DeAngelo, after missing the entire indoor season due to being injured, posted a height of 1.52m in the high jump event while Kennedy recorded a second place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 1:02.40.Sophomore Amber Warnick (Wilmington) and sophomore Emily Mello (Becket) placed third and fourth, respectively, behind Kennedy’s second place showing in the 400m dash. Warnick posted a time of 1:04.58 while Mello checked in with a time of 1:05.04.Junior Marybeth Inman (Wakefield) and senior Sasha Mackey (Quincy) picked up ninth place finishes with Inman recording a time of 5:19.41 in the 1500-meter race and Mackey registering a time of 19:58.78 in the 5000-meter event.SSC’s next meet will be Saturday, April 5 when the team competes at the Fitchburg State College InvitationalThe 4X100m relay team of sophomore Jeff Hajj (Methuen), sophomore Andrew Ames (Danvers), junior Davidson Cimea (Everett) and junior Steve Ciano (Westford) combined to post a New England qualifying time of 45.53 at the season-opening Northeastern University Spring Open Meet held at Dedham.Ciano also posted a seventh place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.24. Cimea contributed a 10th place showing in the 400m dash event posting a time of 52.67. SSC also received a seventh place finish in the long jump competition with freshman Rufus Louf (Salem) who placed seventh with a distance of 5.87m.SSC’s next meet will be Saturday, April 5 when the Vikings compete at the Fitchburg State College Invitational.PHOTO / REBA M.
