Revere robber gets up to 6 years for Lynn heist

SALEM – A Revere man who admitted robbing a convenience store in Lynn last fall of cash and three packs of cigarettes will spend up to six years in state prison.In Salem Superior Court last Friday, Joseph M. Gorman, 31, of 134 Bellingham Ave., changed his plea to guilty on a charge of armed robbery.He was sentenced to serve not less than 18 months and not more than six years in state prison by Judge Howard J. Whitehead.Just before 11:30 p.m., on Oct. 12 a man, later identified as Gorman, walked into the A & A Market at 2 Market Square. At first, Gorman lingered around inside the store for a few minutes before he approached the male store clerk, reached into his right jacket pocket, indicating he had something inside, which later turned out to be a can of starter fluid, and demanded money.The clerk turned over approximately $261. Gorman also grabbed three packs of Marlboro cigarettes before fleeing from the store toward South Common Street.Police quickly responding to the scene arrested Gorman a short distance away.The money, cigarettes and a can of starter fluid were found on his person by police.The store clerk positively identified Gorman as the robber, police said.Gorman has been in custody in lieu of bail since being arrested. He will be credited 171 days towards his term of incarceration.
