Swampscott student causes classroom evacuation

SWAMPSCOTT – An incident involving a second-grade student at Hadley Elementary School resulted in a classroom being evacuated Monday.According to several parents, a student in a second-grade classroom was out of control.”He started kicking other students,” one parent said. “He was throwing things around the classroom and wouldn’t leave when told to. The other students in the classroom were taken to the library.”One parent said the teacher left before the end of the day and a substitute teacher was in the classroom at the time the incident occurred.Another parent said the students being held in the library were dismissed late because school officials were typing a note to send home regarding the incident.Principal Sandra Rivers was not in school Monday or Tuesday so she was unavailable for comment and other school employees declined to comment.School Resource Officer Rose Cheever said she was not called to the school or notified by school officials about the incident.Superintendent Matthew Malone declined to comment on the specifics of the incident or provide a copy of the letter sent home to parents.”We deal in the development of children,” he said. “There are times in child development where children display inappropriate behaviors. Incidents at Hadley are no different than issues elementary schools deal with on a daily basis. I feel it is irresponsible we are discussing this in the newspaper. Hadley School did an excellent job in addressing the developmental issue and parents were communicated with. Parents need to stop the hysteria.”But several parents said this incident was just the most recent event in a chain of incidents involving this particular second-grade student. The boy was one of two students who allegedly assaulted a girl on the playground on March 27. The boys are also accused of assaulting a 7-year-old classmate on March 13 and again on March 14.
