Jeff Valley scored two goals to help lead the Lynn Tech lacrosse team to its first win of the season, 5-2, win over Minuteman Wednesday at Manning Field. Both Valley’s goals came in the first half, which ended with the scored tied at two. Tech started to pull away in the third quarter thanks to a James Wall goal (Manola Morales assist). Junior midfielder James Wall supplied what would be the game-winner in the third. Jordan Rucker scored the fourth goal, unassisted, and Damon Whyte wrapped when he scored with six minutes remaining in the game. The defense was the difference, coach Brad Tilley said.”It really was our defense that won it. My defensive midfield was tremendous,” Tilley said, adding that goalie Rich Contreras (12 saves) was solid in net.The news, however, wasn’t all good for the Tigers (1-1). Tilley said he lost his best defender, Anthony Gallo, to a shoulder injury and attackman Mike Donovan had to go to the hospital to have his shoulder checked out. Tilley was still waiting on those results.S’scott 7, St. Mary’s 3At Manning, A.J. Zarinsky had three goals for the Big Blue (2-0). John Poth had a goal and five assists, Ben Wollersheid, two goals, and John DeAngeles one.St. Mary’s led 2-1 after the first quarter, but by the half, Swampscott had a 4-2 advantage.”They (the Spartans) play a stingy zone defense,” Swampscott coach Josh Fields said. “It took us a while to find some holes in it.”Sam Phillips (8 saves) was in net for the win.St. Mary’s had goals from Joe Twomey, Tom Adams and Craig Story. Don Hess and Matt Rogers split the game in net. The Spartans are 0-1.BASEBALLSt. John’s (D) 6,St. John’s (S) 4At Shrewsbury, junior Mike Yastrzemski – grandson of former Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski – singled in two runs in a three-run sixth to break a 4-4 tie. David DeCelle went the last three for the win, allowing one earned run, a hit and struck out two.The Eagles scored their first run on an error with the second one coming in on a double by Edgett. Chris Carmain singled in Edgett (2 doubles, RBI) for the other run.St. John’s (S) scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth to tie it and one in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Trevor Manzi singled in the sixth to drive in the tying run for the Eagles and Yastrzemski sealed the win with the two-run single. Danny Haugh also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.GIRLS TENNISFenwick 3, North Reading 2At North Reading, third singles player Lizzie Trainor pulled out her match in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, to give the Crusaders the deciding point.
