Baseball Roundup: Salem’s Noone shuts out potent Peabody

April 17, 2008 by Matthew Roy

Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt knew his team’s entrance into the Northeastern Conference wouldn’t come with any gift wins. And on Wednesday at Bezemes Field, the Tanners learned that firsthand.Salem’s Harry Noone was brilliant in keeping the Tanners off-balance all game as he got a first-inning run on a T.J. Larivee double and made it stand up in a 1-0 blanking of the Tanners.”That was an outstanding pitching performance,” Salem coach Mike Ward said. “It’s a good early-season win for us.”Noone’s counterpart, Mark Linehan, was just as good on Wednesday. Linehan allowed only three hits and the lone first-inning run.”Mark threw lights-out. They were just one hit better than us (Wednesday),” Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said. “The game’s funny. We had pitching and defense, but no timely hitting. And you need all three of those to win.”The Witches (2-2) got the game’s lone run when Ben Henderson reached on an infield single and Larivee tattooed a double off the left-center fence to bring him around.Peabody (2-2) had several chances to get the game tied or take the lead but couldn’t capitalize. In the seventh, Linehan hit a shot to left field but Matt Paine made a running over-the-shoulder catch to save the game.English 4, Revere 2At Revere, the Bulldogs (3-1) got a stellar pitching performance from Kyle Moore, who allowed two hits and no earned runs with seven strikeouts and only one walk.English got single runs in the first and sixth innings and a 2-run Alex Fiste single in the fourth. Jonathan Surrette and Brendan Carritte also drove home runs.Beverly 5, Classical 4At Beverly, the Panthers overcame a 4-0 deficit in the fifth inning thanks to Joe Wioncek’s bases-clearing triple and then won the game in the seventh on a Sam Baker infield single that scored Jack Leathersich.Classical (1-1) scored twice in the second on RBI singles from Richard Nelson and Brian Kolodziej and two more times in the fourth on a Tyler Gauthier RBI single and a passed ball. Gauthier struck out 11 in five innings on the mound.Winthrop 6, S’Scott 2At Winthrop, the Vikings’ (3-0, 2-0 NEC) Cory Collins put the clamps on Swampscott (1-2, 0-2 NEC), holding the Big Blue to five hits while striking out 12 in a complete-game win.Chris Carew was the big bat for Winthrop, pounding out three hits and four RBI. Steve Moran was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two stolen bases for Swampscott. Peter Kinchley also was 2-for-3 for the Big Blue.Danvers 7, M’head 3At Twi Field in Danvers, the Falcons (3-0, 2-0 NEC) got six innings of scoreless pitching from Greg Ladd. But the win came at a cost, as third baseman Chris Perry was lost for three weeks with a pulled muscle.Danvers scored twice in the first and fourth innings while putting up a three-spot in the third. Troy Thibodeau was 2-for-2 with two RBI while Larry Saggese was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Jake Korthas was 2-for-3.St. John’s 5, Xaverian 4At Westwood, Greg Donahue’s 2-run single in the top of the seventh was the difference as the Eagles moved to 5-1. Matt Warden picked up the win in relief, throwing three hitless innings.Derek Dubois, Mike Yastrzemski and Chris Welch all drove home runs for the Prep, which got a 2-for-3 effort from Chris Carmain.
