Softball Roundup: Fenwick wins in extra innings

Christina Cipriani scored on an overthrow in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Bishop Fenwick softball team a 6-5 win over St. Mary’s Wednesday at Peabody.Cipriani (2-for-4, 2 RBI) doubled to centerfield with one out, and when she tried to stretch it into a triple, the throw was wild and she came home with the game-winner.This was the type of game that takes the fans for a ride, but leaves the coaches with a few more gray hairs. Fenwick scored first, on an RBI single by Cipriani in the first inning, only to see Katelynn Fanning (3-for-4) tie the game in the bottom of the inning on an error. Fenwick took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Cipriani, who then scored on an error, but the Spartans had some fire left. They scored four in the fifth with Christina Burri (2-run single) and Erin McAndrews (RBI single) providing the bats.The 5-3 St. Mary’s lead didn’t last long. Fenwick trimmed the lead to one in the fifth and tied it in the sixth on a Casey Fitzerald RBI single.The usually rock-solid St. Mary’s (3-1, 1-1 CCL) defense had a tough day, making eight errors. The mistakes proved costly. Fenwick is 2-2, 1-1 in the CCL. Fanning took the loss (5 hits, 4 strikeouts, 3 walks, 1 unearned run)Classical 9, Beverly 1At Grace Rogato Field, the Rams (3-2, 3-0 NEC) used five two-out runs in the fifth inning to break open a 2-1 game. Amanda Stevens led the way with two hits and three RBI. Kristen Dean also drove home three runs while Afton Dean and Erin McCall also had RBI. Jenny Garrity got the win, striking out four and walking one while going 2-for-3 at the plate.Revere 13, English 6At Keaney Park, the Bulldogs had a tough game defensively with seven errors and Revere (3-1) had the bats cranking. Lisa Polsonetti went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI; other stars included Kristin DeCandia (2-for-5, triple, 3 RBI); Stacy Marino (2-for-2, 2 RBI); and Amanda Morash, 3-for-4, 2 RBI. Nicole Perullo (5 innings, 4 hits) picked up the win.English did have a couple of big hits. Catcher Cara Crowley had a base-clearing triple and Alesha Despres singled in three (she missed a base and had to go back) for the Bulldogs’ runs. Tiffany Drown pitched the first four innings for English and Stephanie Scherrer the last three.Saugus 11, G’ster 6At Saugus, the Sachems (4-0) keep on rolling behind junior pitcher Ashlee Patterson (6 hits, 5 strikeouts, 2 walks, 4 earned runs). Gloucester scored three runs in the first inning, but Saugus got them back when Lauren Garchinsky (3 hits 3 RBI) tripled to bring in two runs.Kristen Garrity doubled and scored on a Cassie Labella double in the second; in the third, Saugus plated three runs when Garchinsky doubled and came in on a Haley Erickson triple. Kristen Garrity had an RBI double that inning. Saugus added three runs in the fourth on a Kelly Garrity base-clearing triple. The left fielder also made a beauty of a catch in the sixth to save a couple of runs.S’scott 5, Winthrop 1At Swampscott, sophomore Kirstin Vinal picked up her first win, allowing four hits and striking out nine. The Big Blue (2-1, 1-1 NEC) scored twice in the first inning on RBI doubles by Katherine Gorham and Vinal, and three runs in the third inning. Sam Perry had a sacrifice fly to bring in one run and another scored when two outfielders collided. A run also came in on an error.Danvers 10, M’head 5At Marblehead, Danvers shortstop Ashley Burnham stung the Magicians (1-2) with a 2-run homer and a solo shot. Marblehead’s Katie Fallon also put one out of the park. Both teams had 10 hits. Danvers scored five runs in the fourth. Marblehead third baseman Ashley White was the defensive star with eight assists.
