PEABODY – A camp fire started by homeless people in the woods behind Spring Pond got out of hand and burned nearly an acre of land Thursday, Fire Capt. Paul Lynch said.Three Peabody fire engines and a State Forestry firefighter spent about 90 minutes fighting the flames using fire brooms and water cans after the blaze broke out at about 6 p.m.The fire started nearly a quarter-mile from the nearest road, making it impossible for fire trucks to get near the scene, Lynch said.”I sent one crew in (first) to make an assessment,” he said. The blaze was located closest to the area commonly referred to as “Big Spring Pond” behind Bowden Road.No one was injured.
