PEABODY – Over 100 residents and staff at Brooksby Village participated in the retirement community’s 7th annual Brooksby Marathon Monday afternoon.Contestants walked around a mile-long track through campus, overcoming obstacles such as Brooksby’s own versions of Heartbreak Hill and Kenmore Square. Friends and family members cheered them on from the sidelines. This year’s winners may not have won a grand prize of $150,000 cash (like the winner of the Boston Marathon), but they did, however, take home their own wreathe. Those who placed first, second, and third all received metals.Finishing first in the men’s category was resident John Wroblewski; Martha Allphin was the first woman to cross the line.Over $1,000 was raised by the event and will benefit Special Olympics Massachusetts, a branch of the internationally known program that provides sports training and competition for children and adults with mental retardation. Over 8,000 athletes participate in the Massachusetts program alone.
