LYNN – A Woburn man with a history of drunken driving was shot by police on Euclid Avenue Monday night after he allegedly used the residential street for his own demolition derby.David A. Chiuchiolo, 36, of 20 Tremont St., was arraigned from his bed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on six counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (his motor vehicle). He pleaded innocent late Monday afternoon, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.Chiuchiolo struck a telephone pole, a wall, several cars, three Lynn police cruisers and nearly struck two pedestrians before he was shot, Essex DA spokesman Steve O’Connell said in a statement.Police initially tried to stop the suspect at about 10:30 p.m. Monday after multiple residents reported that a car crashed into a telephone pole near 96 Maple St. and fled, police said in a press release. The same vehicle, a 2001 Lincoln Town Car, allegedly smashed into a stone wall near Flax Pond a couple of minutes later, according to police.The driver of the Town Car started to leave the scene as police arrived. An officer followed the Town Car down Euclid Avenue toward Broadway, but discontinued the pursuit after the suspect’s vehicle began driving on the wrong side of the road, according to police.As additional officers arrived, “a series of collisions followed,” according to the police statement.The pursuit, which O’Connell described as “low-speed,” ended in front of 334 Euclid Ave., where Chiuchiolo was shot in the upper torso. The identity of the officer who fired the gunshot was not available Tuesday.Judge Maurice Flynn ordered Chiuchiolo held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing to be held Tuesday, April 29 in Lynn District Court.Flynn also revoked Chiuchiolo’s bail on a pending drunken driving case, in which he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol for a third time, driving with a suspended license and a marked lanes violation.Chiuchiolo was arrested shortly after midnight on Jan. 19 after he crashed his Cadillac into a telephone pole near 342 Lynnfield St. in Lynn.He failed several field sobriety tests and scored a .13 on a Breathalyzer test, police said. The legal limit is .08.Chiuchiolo allegedly told officers he had three beers at the Celtics game a short time earlier. Officers found a hypodermic needle and two burned roaches of marijuana in Chiuchiolo’s car, according to police.At the time of the incident, a police sergeant seized and destroyed Chiuchiolo’s driver’s license.
