Peabody police officer arrested at residence

Robin Kaminski

April 26, 2008 by Robin Kaminski

PEABODY – A suspended Peabody police officer was located at his home Friday on a warrant issued by Salem Superior Court after he failed to appear at a scheduled court hearing Thursday.Peabody police and Salem Superior Court Probation officers located George Sideris, 36, in his residence at 59 Walnut St., around 2:30 p.m.Sideris allegedly barricaded the entrance door and refused to allow the officers inside his residence.Officers managed to gain entry into the home and located Sideris in another room where he was taken into custody.Sideris was transported to North Shore Medical Center/ Salem Hospital, and is recovering from a self-inflicted injury. He will remain in custody pending further arraignment in Salem Superior Court.Judge David Lowy originally assumed Sideris got his court dates mixed up when he failed to show for a scheduled appearance on Wednesday, but when Sideris didn’t show up on Thursday, Lowy issued a warrant for his arrest.Sideris is charged with beating his then 73-year old elderly mother, Melpomeni Sideris, into a coma on Thanksgiving Day in 2004 at their Ellsworth Road home in Peabody that they shared.Mrs. Sideris, 76, was in a coma for several weeks following the incident and eventually emerged, but never returned home. She is currently living in a nursing home in Lynn and Sideris is allowed supervised visits with his mother.
