Tennis Roundup: Swampscott boys stop Classical, stay perfect in NEC

The Swampscott High boys tennis team defeated Classical, 4-1, Wednesday at Breed, but the Rams, who went into the match undefeated, went down swinging.Swampscott’s Alex Hanbury defeated Larry Cheung, 6-1, 6-0, at first singles and Josh Ruskin defeated Classical’s Alex Rittershaus, 6-3, 6-3, in the two spot. Classical picked up its win at third singles, with Daveth Cheth defeating Brandon Poulin, 7-5, 6-4.The first doubles match went three sets with Swampscott’s Chris Kaplan-Sam Andler defeating Ben Wheeler-Eric Silva, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. In second doubles, Scott Leffler-Jared Jacobs defeated Classical’s Brian Houde-Zac Osborne, 6-4, 6-2.Swampscott is 6-1, 5-0 Northeastern Conference and the Rams are 5-1.Ham-Wen 4, L’field 1At Hamilton-Wenham, Steve Carr-Mike Bratt won 6-4, 6-3, at first doubles for the Pioneers’ (2-4) only points. First singles was a battle, with Lynnfield’s Nick Scangas and the Generals’ Chase Curtis both undefeated going into the match. Curtis pulled out the win, 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 6-1.St. Mary’s 3, English 2At Lynn, St. Mary’s defeated cross-town rival English behind its efforts from its doubles teams and third singles.Winning for St. Mary’s (4-1) were Michael Louvaris, third singles (6-0, 6-1); Mike Maghsoudi-Kevin McCarthy, first doubles (6-1, 6-4); and Matt O’Hare and Mike Conti, second doubles (6-2, 6-3).For the Bulldogs (0-6), Dara Chhan won first singles after his opponent, Dan Beaton, retired with an ankle sprain. German Gorovodsky won second singles for English (6-0, 6-2).M’head 5, Revere 0At Marblehead, the boys swept the Patriots to improve to 4-0.
