Softball: Winthrop snaps Classical winning streak

The Classical High softball team saw its six-game winning streak come to a grinding halt with a 3-1 loss to Winthrop Friday at Grace Rogato Field.The Vikings (7-4) got all the offense they would need in the first inning when they scored a run on a Kristen Finn single and another on an error. They padded they lead in the four thanks to a Lindsey Barker RBI single.Classical had a couple of chances to do some damage. The Rams (7-3, 7-1 Northeastern Conference) loaded the bases in the first inning with one out, but came away empty handed. They had runners on second and third in the fifth with one out, but two pop ups later the Rams were heading back to the bench.”We missed opportunities at the plate and we made a couple of errors,” Classical coach Chris Warren said. “We didn’t play our greatest game.”Jenny Garrity took the loss, allowing seven hits, striking out three and walking two. Finn allowed eight hits and struck out five for the win.”It was a great high school game,” Winthrop coach Dave Guffy said. “It the weather was better, I would say it would have been a perfect game.”Swampscott 6, English 3At Keaney Park, the Bulldogs lead 3-2 after five innings, but the Big Blue came knocking in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to put the game away. Tiffany Drown went five innings and Cathia Hernandez pitched the final two in relief for the Bulldogs. Carissa Roche pitched the first five for the Big Blue before giving way to Kirsten Vinal.Marissa Gambale (2-for-2, RBI), Mallorie McGrath (2-for-3, double, RBI) and Vinal (2-for-3) supplied the firepower for Swampscott (5-4, 5-3 Northeastern Conference. English’s first run came on an infield and and the other two came on sacrifice flies by Jackie Trapula and Cara Crowley.Saugus 13, Revere 4At Revere, the Sachems brought the bats to this one. Haley Erickson went 3-for-5 with three RBI and Lauren Garchinsky went 2-for-4 with a 2-run homer in the third inning. Elizabeth Shaw had two hits, one of them a triple, and two RBI. Saugus is 8-4, 6-4 Northeastern Conference.Spellman 13, Fenwick 1At Peabody, the Cardinals put this one away early, scoring four runs in the first inning and five in the second.”They’re a great hitting team,” Fenwick coach Paul Lyman said.Fenwick only tapped Spellman for two hits, one of them by Courtney Begin, who also had a stolen base.Fenwick is 3-7 and Spellman is 10-1. Spellman’s only loss came against St. Mary’s, the team Fenwick plays on Wednesday. The Crusaders won the first meeting between the two teams.Danvers 7, Beverly 4At Beverly, the Falcons (7-3, 6-2 Northeastern Conference) scored three runs in the first inning and added another two in the third and fourth innings to put the game out of reach. Ashley Burnham went 3-for-4 and scored a run and Caraline Mulholland had two hits and two RBI. One of Mulholland’s hits was a solo home run to dead center in the third inning. Diana Bean picked up the win, allowing six hits and two walks. The game was called in the seventh due to the rain.Gloucester 10, Salem 4At Salem, the Fishermen (8-3, 5-3 Northeastern Conference ) knew it was going to be a good day when Alisha Clayton led off the game with a solo home run to left field. Gloucester also had good productin from Ali Kippan (2-for-4); Nicole Whipple (3-for-4); Addy Blakeley (2-for-3) and Kelly Benson (2-for-2). Jill Lukegord (6 this, 5 strikeouts, 1 walk) picked up the win.
