Tennis Roundup: Beverly girls end jinx against Marblehead

Beverly girls coach Karen Corcoran knew her team had a shot at defeating perennial powerhouse Marblehead after coming close last year, but she also knew it would be a challenge. The Panthers hadn’t beaten the Magicians in at least the seven years she has been head coach.Beverly’s losing streak came to an end Monday with a 3-2 win at Marblehead. The Panthers are 8-0; Marblehead is 5-1.”The girls were definitely happy,” Corcoran said. “The girls knew it had been a long time.”Beverly took all three singles matches, with Sabrina Salmela defeating Adrienne Schenkel, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1. Meghan Corcoran defeating Amy Mishkin at two, 6-0, 6-0; and No. 3 Sophie Blau defeating Morgan Sharrio, 6-2, 6-0. Beverly won at first doubles with Amanda Krugman-Gina Pinciaro, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), over Shelby Carroll-Elise Hamilton.Lydia Smith-Ryan Heffrin won 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 at second doubles for Marblehead.English 3, Winthrop 2At Winthrop, the Bulldogs broke into the win column in a match that was decided at second doubles, where Anjeza Beheraj-Mariah Dooley won 6-1, 6-1. English also had wins from Alexandra Pascu at first singles, 6-4, 6-2, and Ashley Turner, third singles, 7-5, 6-2.
