SAUGUS – Lorrane Varone, the wife of Saugus Building Inspector Fred Varone, died suddenly inside their Prospect Avenue home early Sunday morning, police said.She was 57 years old.Fred Varone, 69, called police at about 12:45 a.m. after he found his wife in their bed not breathing, according to police.Authorities say Mrs. Varone choked to death after vomiting in her sleep.According to police, Mr. Varone said his wife had been drinking heavily earlier in the evening and retired to bed about 30 minutes before finding her.Emergency personnel used several methods to attempt to revive Mrs. Varone, including CPR, before transporting her to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital where she was pronounced dead.Mr. Varone gained media attention recently after a Town Counsel memo named him along with five other town officials the subject of an FBI investigation.Town Counsel John Vasapoli told the Item on April 18 that the FBI requested town documents about Varone and the five other officials but was not told exactly why those people were being investigated.Authorities are not treating Mrs. Varone’s death as suspicious.
