Lynn road repairs to last months

Robin Kaminski

May 9, 2008 by Robin Kaminski

LYNN-Repairs to an intersection of Chestnut and Maple streets began this week and are expected to last for a number of months.Department of Public Works commissioner Jay J. Fink said the Massachusetts Highway Department has finally begun the long-awaited intersection reconstruction project that will include traffic signals.Fink said residents in Ward 1 and Ward 2 would be affected indefinitely, and the repairs will impact with both vehicular and foot traffic.?While MassHighway has coordinated an aggressive schedule outlined to include mobilization and installation of signage in the Chestnut and Maple street locations, we are attempting to satisfy all factions as completely and quickly as possible,” he said. “The roadway, traffic signals and temporary patching will be ongoing, with adjustments provided as needed.”Fink said sidewalks will be removed and excavations will occur later this month.?Where and when applicable, new granite curbs have been approved to be set on sidewalks and handicapped ramps will also be installed, and where appropriate, finalized by the installation of traffic cabinets for traffic lights,” he said.Residents with concerns are asked to contact the Water & Sewer Department for water and drainage issues, Ward 1 City Councilor Wayne Lozzi, Ward 2 councilor William Trahant, or DPW Associate Commissioner Manuel Alcantara, who is handling logistics, at 781-268-8000.?While we are very anxious and pleased with the intended program, we ask all area residents to be cognizant of this initiative and to be tolerant of the required timeframe for a successful reconstruction,” Fink said.
