May 12, 2008 by Matthew Roy

Two days after suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Beverly in 12 innings, the Swampscott baseball team returned to the field on Saturday in an effort to keep its state tournament hopes going. And thanks to a superb effort from John Beaulieu, Swampscott did just that. Beaulieu held Salem to four hits and one run while his teammates scored four times in the first off Salem ace Harry Noone to grab a 4-1 win at the new Salem State College baseball field.”That was definitely something we needed,” Swampscott coach T.J. Baril said about Beaulieu’s effort. “He put us on his shoulders.”The senior needed only 78 pitches to go the route. He struck out four, scattered four hits and walked a single batter. The Big Blue (5-8) took advantage of a Salem (8-6) error with two outs in the first inning to turn a 1-0 lead into a 4-0 lead. Dan Nellhaus drove home two in the inning while Hunter Gordon and Dean Dennis took care of the other RBI.From there on, Beaulieu took care of business.”We started off strong and John was able to keep them at bay,” Baril said.English 8, M’head 3At Fraser Field, coming off back-to-back losses against Gloucester and Danvers, the Bulldogs got a much-needed win as Jonathan Surrette pitched a complete game, striking out seven and walking two.”Wednesday and Thursday were pretty demoralizing, so to bounce back and get a win is a good thing,” English coach Joe Caponigro said.Sophomore Gabe Smith led the English offense with a pair of hits and two RBI while third baseman Jonathan Santalises had two hits and drove in a run.St. Mary’s 7, Austin 3At Fraser Field on Saturday, the Spartans (7-7, 5-5 CCL) scored twice in the first, second and fifth innings and once in the sixth. Cath. 3, Fenwick 2 (8 innings)At Peabody on Saturday, the Crusaders (6-8, 5-4 CCL) just couldn’t get the big hit when it was needed. Tom Mowles started and pitched well, going seven innings in allowing five hits and striking out four.Danvers 3, Beverly 0At Twi Field in Danvers, the Falcons (11-2, 9-2 NEC) continued their winning ways as Bobby Dean struck out 13 and walked one in a three-hit gem.
