PEABODY – The mother of a 2-month-old infant who was left unattended for over an hour Thursday outside Babies-R-Us will not face criminal charges, police said.Shortly after 11 a.m., police were called to the Route 114 store after another customer noticed the baby was inside the car alone with the doors locked, according to police.Officer Rick Cameron was the first officer to arrive, but firefighters and paramedics were already on scene, police spokesman Lt. Dennis Bonaiuto said.”They could tell immediately that the baby was fine,” Bonaiuto said. After rescuers forced entry into the car and retrieved the infant, the officer grabbed the car’s registration and went inside Babies-R-Us to look for the mother.Police say she was visibly upset when they found her.”She said she forgot she had the child with her,” Bonaiuto said. The baby was taken to North Shore Children’s Hospital as a precaution.Bonaiuto said no charges will be filed against the mother at this time, but added that the Department of Social Services was contacted to investigate the situation. He says the child was lucky that Thursday’s temperature was relatively cool and the car was parked in a location where the baby was easily noticed.”Thank God a passerby took the initiative of calling the police,” he said. “It could have been a tragic situation.”
