Second new Revere fire station opens today

Thor Jourgensen

June 27, 2008 by Thor Jourgensen

REVERE – Firefighters inaugurate their second brand-new fire station in as many weeks today with the opening of the North Revere station on Salem Street.Built by Overlook Ridge residential developer Roseland Properties, the new station will, fittingly enough, be home starting this fall to a brand-new pumper engine. The truck, part of a $1.7 million fire equipment purchase, will replace Engine 3, a 19-year-old truck that will be based in the station for the rest of the summer.Sixteen Revere fire officers and firefighters will occupy half the building, sharing it with Malden firefighters assigned to that city’s Engine 4. The Overlook project straddles Malden and Revere and the station will provide fire coverage for both cities. The Fire Department opened its new Parkway fire station two weeks ago and inaugurated it last week. The North Revere station will be dedicated with a memorial plaque honoring the late Louis DeSantis, a firefighter who died of a heart attack on April 18, 1986 while fighting a brush fire a short distance from the site of the new station. At the time of his death, DeSantis was a 21-year department veteran assigned to Engine 3 as a driver and pump operator.A memorial stone will also be dedicated today in front of the new station in memory of Marianne MacFarlane, a Revere resident and United Airlines employee who was on board Flight 175 when terrorists flew it into the World Trade Center. She was the niece of retired Firefighter Fran Flood and the daughter of Anne MacFarlane and the late George MacFarlane of Revere.
