Darkness suspends Tedesco Cup first round; Sachar, Glowacz in lead

June 28, 2008 by Matthew Roy

MARBLEHEAD – It will probably go into the books as one of the longest rounds in the 44 year history of the Tedesco Cup. And some 14 hours after the first ball was struck, darkness finally put a hault to opening round play with two groups still on the course. But the inclement weather conditions, which forced a 2-hour rain delay on Friday afternoon, didn’t bother the team of Matt Sachar and Steve Glowacz. The duo combined to make seven birdies en route to a round of 9-under par 61 and a one shot lead in the suspended first round of the annual event at Tedesco CC.The two groups left on the course when play was finally called just after 9 p.m. will return to finish their rounds today and second round play will go on as scheduled.Sachar and Glowacz also have a share of the lead in the gross portion of the competition with Tom Collins and Kevin Rourke. But both competitions have a boatload of teams within striking distance. For most of the day, it looked like 8-under par 62 was going to be the score atop the leaderboard as the teams of Dan Santanello-Robert Keough and Mike Cronin-James Belli teed off late in the morning flight and posted the number to beat. And it looked like that minus-8 would stand up as thunderstorms invaded the area, forcing the delay in play and resulting in the final groups o of the day to tee off around 5 p.m. instead of 1:59.Conditions improved as the afternoon progressed, with the sun making an appearance late in the toing, and the scores went low.Ed Holland and Andy Horvitz were the first to take advantage of the benign course, posting a round of 7-under 63 before Sachar and Glowacz went on their tear.Dick and Jeff Massey also recorded a round of 63 in the afternoon to join a six way tie for fifth. Also coming in at 7-under were Tom D’Arcangelo-Dick Collari; Walter Suydam-Jay Maguire; Jay Kelly-Tony Conigliari; Pat and Matt Curtin and Ed and Paul Barry.Kevin Daly-Mike Hickey; Charles Clark-Dave D’Amours; Tim Whalen-Kevin Lane; Tony Wood-Joe Faia and John Mulerig-William Buckley sit three shots off the lead at 6-under par.Sachar-Glowacz and Collins-Rourke have a two shot lead over Holland-Horvitz in the gross division.
