LYNN-The former bait shop on Blossom Street Extension was quickly torn down Friday to make way for a commuter ferry to shuffle passengers to and from the city of Boston. The total cost of the project is $3.1 million and will ultimately create a pier large enough to hold three vessels and a commuter ferryboat ramp for easy access. In December, the Massachusetts Seaport Authority approved $750,000 in funding for the ferry, which will be used for the first phase of the three-phase project to repair the entire parking area for future ferry customers, build a steel bulkhead and upgrade the boat ramp. The Blossom Street Extension stretch of roadway is currently open to the public but is in dire need of repair.City officials hope the creation of a ferry will boost the city?s attractiveness because commuters would be able to quickly access the city of Boston.James Cowdell, executive director of the Economic Development & Industrial Corporation (EDIC) previously said he plans to approach the Seaport Advisory Council later this year for funding for the second and third phase of the project.
