Blue Line commuters shuttle on

Thor Jourgensen

July 1, 2008 by Thor Jourgensen

REVERE – Commuters are making do with a longer trip into Boston or a ride on a bus instead of a subway car while Blue Line train platforms are renovated.Wonderland station is scheduled to reopen July 4 when work shifts to Wood Island where shuttle buses will transport riders to Airport station. Train service to Wood Island resumes on Aug. 2.Since June 21, Megan McDonald of Peabody and other commuters have parked at Wonderland and taken a shuttle bus to Revere Beach station or been dropped off there to catch a Blue Line train into Boston.McDonald said the renovation has added 10 minutes to her commute. She wishes the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority had scheduled the renovation work “in bits and pieces.””It’s kind of a hassle. They didn’t give us much notice,” she said.Workers are stripping away the old platform surfaces and laying down new ones as well as making other safety repairs. The work schedule for other Blue Line stations include closing Revere Beach station on Aug. 2 for repairs with bus service transporting riders to trains running from Wonderland. The buses will run every four to six minutes during rush hour and every six to 12 minutes during off peak hours.Train service resumes from Revere Beach on Aug. 16 when Beachmont station closes through Aug. 29 for repairs. Buses will transport riders from Beachmont to trains running from Orient Heights station.Christine Heuston usually pays $3 to park on the North Shore Road side of Wonderland station and takes the train to work. Since the platform repairs began, she has paid four dollars to park in another lot before boarding a bus to Boston.Sarah Fleek said the platform improvements would match the new trains the MBTA is starting to operate on the Blue Line. The first of 94 new train cars are already in service and the others will go into service over the next 14 months.
