SWAMPSCOTT – Town Administrator Andrew Maylor will be staying put at least for the time being.Maylor did not get the town manager position in Billerica he was hoping for.”Although I am disappointed not to have been offered the position in Billerica,” he said, “I remain committed to serving the residents of Swampscott.”Maylor was one of three finalists for the position along with William Williams, who is the village manager of Port Chester, N.Y., and Mark Haddad, who was the former chief administrative officer in Stratford, Conn.Billerica Selectmen Chairman Jim O’Donnell said selectmen interviewed all three candidates at a meeting Tuesday night, which lasted more than six hours. O’Donnell said after much discussion, selectmen voted unanimously to offer the job to Williams. According to O’Donnell, Maylor was the first choice of two of the selectmen and Williams was the first choice of the other three.”Mr. Maylor was a very close second,” he said. “With all due respect if something happens to Mr. Williams we have also voted to offer the position to Mr. Maylor.”O’Donnell said Maylor was an excellent candidate and the selectmen were very impressed with him.”I would say he came across as a very good candidate,” he said. “He is very astute when it comes to local government.”Maylor, who told Swampscott selectmen a few months ago he intends to pursue other job opportunities, said he does not have any other job applications out there and doesn’t have any interviews scheduled.Maylor signed a 5-year contract when he was hired by the town and negotiated a 2-year extension in 2006, which commenced after the expiration of the first contract in 2007. Maylor, who is the first town administrator in Swampscott, started work Oct. 7, 2002 and his contract expires in approximately 18 months.Maylor was one of two finalists for the town administrator position in Wakefield earlier this year but selectmen voted to hire Stephen Maio by a 5-2 decision. Maio is a former Wakefield selectman, who resigned from the board for the sole purpose of applying for the town administrator position.Maylor also recently submitted his resume for a city manager position in Oviedo, Fla. He was one of 14 semifinalists but he did not get the job and he was a finalist for a position in Acton, which he also did not get. In November 2005 Maylor was one three finalists for the town manager position in Winthrop until he withdrew his name from consideration. It was the second time in as many years he had applied for a position elsewhere and withdrawn his name prior to the vote. In August 2004 Maylor was one of finalists for a job in Winchester until he withdrew his name.
