DANVERS – The Lynn Babe Ruth 15s spotted Revere three runs before the bats came to life in a 6-3 win in District 1 tournament play Tuesday at Twi Field.Lynn will play the winner of tonight’s Revere-Danvers losers’ bracket final Thursday. If Lynn wins, it will play either Saugus or Peabody in the district final. If Revere wins, the two teams meet again in the “if necessary” game on Friday. This one was anything but easy, with Revere taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Jack Nee and an RBI single by Joe Sasso. The damage could have been worse, but Lynn cut the second runner down at the plate on a relay from left field. Revere made it 3-0 in the third on an RBI single by George Winer, but it was all Lynn the rest of the way.As 14-year-old all-stars, the Lynn crew showed it had what it takes to come back from the brink when it lost the opening game of the state finals and went on to win the next six games and the state championship. Although manager Brian Mulvey probably wouldn’t be adverse to a rout every now and again, he was pleased with his team’s ability to rally from a deficit.”We got down 3-0, but we kept battling,” Mulvey said. ” And we did a lot of it with two outs.”Lynn’s big inning came in the bottom of the third, when No. 9 batter Ryan Barrows and leadoff hitter Gabe Smith walked. Although Smith was out on a force play at second, Lynn still had runners on first and third with one out, setting the stage for Brendan Carritte, who drove them both in on a single to centerfield. The Lynn team might have been satisfied to come out of the inning only trailing by a run, 3-2, but Sam Hill had other ideas. With two outs and Carritte and pitcher Alex Fiste (hit by a pitch) on base, Hill hit a shot over the left-field fence and the 3-0 deficit was quickly a 5-3 Lynn lead.Lynn only had four hits off Revere hurler Nick DiMare, but Hill had two of them. His single in the sixth inning drove in Tyler Gauthier, who had also singled, with the final run.Fiste only allowed five hits, with Revere third baseman Frank Colleran accounting for two of them, both singles. Fiste struck out nine and walked three in the complete-game win.”We had some clutch hitting and our defense played solid,” Mulvey said. “We made a few mistakes, but nothing that really cost us. Revere’s a tough team. That home run was key ? That was the big blow of the game.”
