LYNN – The Harry Agganis games, played in memory of Lynn’s greatest athlete ever, commence tomorrow with an awards breakfast, followed by the softball and baseball classics – all at Fraser Field.Agganis, nicknamed the “Golden Greek,” was a three-sport standout at Lynn Classical, who went on to star in football and baseball at Boston University – and later played for the Boston Red Sox.He died in 1955 as the result of a pulmonary embolism suffering after taking ill while playing for the Red Sox.During the course of next week there will be a women’s and men’s basketball game (Monday at Lynn Engish at 6 and 7:30 respectively); men’s and women’s soccer games (Tuesday at Manning Field, 5:30 and 7:30) and the football classic (Wednesday, 7, at Manning Field).The festivities get under way at 10 a.m. Sunday with the awards breakfast at Fraser.Among the honorees will be the 17 scholarship winners for this year – 13 from the North Shore area and four others from Boston.Since its inception, upon Agganis’ death in 1955, the foundation has awarded $1,253,525 in college scholarships to 798 student-athletes.Five new members will be inducted into the Agganis Foundation Hall of Fame with the announcement of the Harold O. Zimman Foundation Award, Dr. Elmo Benedetto Athletics Award, the Paul Cavanagh Community Award, the David C. Weidner Media Award and the Charles Demakis Heritage Award, which is presented to a person of Greek heritage who advances the foundation’s ideals of academics and athletics.The softball game follows at 12 noon, with the baseball game at 2.
