MARBLEHEAD – Selectmen will be making some selections in the next few weeks. The deadline was Wednesday for applications for a vacant seat on the Board of Assessors.Assessor Richard Riess has been sidelined by illness in the past few months and recently moved to Colorado to be closer to his family. The selectmen are scheduled to hold a joint meeting with the Board of Assessors Wednesday evening to fill the vacancy.Selectmen and the Board of Library Trustees are scheduled to meet that same evening to interview candidates for the vacancy created when Library Trustee Judy Gates left Marblehead to work with the Peace Corps in Mongolia.Trustees and assessors are elected. The candidates chosen that evening will serve until May. Riess’s term was scheduled to expire in May and Gates’s successor will have to run for election to serve the remaining portion of her term, which expires in 2010.The trustee’s seat has drawn interest from Barbara Collins Rosenberg, Walter Horan and Maura Phelan Murnane.Selectmen have also received the resignation of Board of Appeals member David Bennet, an architect who said he wants to focus his volunteer efforts on the subcommittee overseeing the Glover-Eveleth school construction project. The board is accepting letters of intent from all interested parties who would like to serve on the appeals board as a full-time member.Letters of intent should be submitted to the Board of Selectmen, Abbot Hall, 188 Washington St., Marblehead, MA 01945 by Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 5 p.m.
