LYNN – Members of Girls Inc. are becoming cultured this summer thanks to a new program that explores the lifestyle and heritage of many different countries. In a diverse community such as Lynn, many educational and cultural experiences are available for students and Girls Inc. is taking advantage of that by exposing young girls to the many cultures around them.Thursday, a group of participants celebrated Cambodian Day at Girls Inc. by visiting local monks, participating in traditional Cambodian culture and enjoying Cambodian food. The day began with a blessing of the country’s flag at the Girls Inc. Broad Street office, followed by a walk to the Chestnut Street Buddhist Temple to meet with monks from that region. From the temple girls walked to the Harrington Elementary School on Dexter Street to take part in a traditional Cambodian Water Festival and wrapped up the day by returning to Girls Inc. for a Cambodian feast. The heritage celebrations take place every Thursday. In the future the girls will learn about Haiti, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Africa. There is at least one staff member from each one of those countries working at Girls Inc. who participates in the event and helps the students understand more about each culture.
