By showing up, the Gautreau American Legion team gained a valuable victory Friday.The Raiders arrived in Beverly on time to play their game, but Beverly had only seven players.Thus, Beverly forfeited, giving Gautreau two valuable points in its race for the District 8 playoffs.Though the season ends Tuesday, Gautreau plays Sunday and Monday to wrap up its season.”We’re playing real well,” said manager Chris Tgettis. “I’m really pleased. It should be an interesting couple of days, because there are a lot of teams alive.The Raiders suffered a setback Thursday, falling to Newburyport. However, even in defeat, Tgettis saw a silver lining.”Brian Maynard pitched, and he did very well,” Tgettis said. “He kept us in the game, and we had plenty of opportunities.”Two of the teams Gautreau is competing with for the final two playoff spots (Andover and Newburyport are already in) are Swampscott and Connery.Last night, Swampscott defeated Peabody, 14-4.Peter Kinchley got the win, pitching in a rain-shortened complete game. He gave up seven hits and struck out four.Steve Moran was 2-for-4 with two runs and 3 RBI; Chris Cameron was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI; and Phil Witt was 2-for-2 with a double, triple and four RBI.Thursday, Connery fell to Andover, 4-1, with Felipe Barahona going 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. He has four strikeouts.Roberto Reyes hit a solo home run, his fifth of the season; Vinny Decesare had two hits and Nick Conti had the other hit.Junior Little LeagueSwampscott 10, Somerville 0In a losers’ bracket game, Matt Bidetta had a two-hitter.Swampscott now awaits the lower of the Allston-Brighton/Billerica game, and will play today (2).Zach Kalapinski triple and drove two runs. Mark Losier hit a two-run double, and Mike Walsh played well at shortstop with six assists.
