MARBLEHEAD – They say many hands make light work and the Friends of the Abbot Public Library are looking for some new hands. The Friends provide financial assistance to the library from book sales and other sources, encourage gifts and donations and promote the library in a variety of ways.Acting President Rose Kernusky, a member since the mid-1980s and a past president, has accepted the duties of acting president for 2008.Former President Anne Thomas had to resign due to family obligations. Other officers include Acting Vice President Toni Matsu, Recording Secretary Gail McLaren, Treasurer Anne Remington and Chairman of Book Sales Steve Tseki. They meet on the second Tuesday of each month at the library. In a color newsletter, Kernusky has put members on notice: she is reorganizing the Friends and is looking to fill several positions.”I live in eternal hope of filling all positions,” she said. The standing committees, which have votes on the board, include the Newsletter Committee – there is a Mailing Subcommittee to make sure it’s distributed – an Outreach Committee that handles community programs and the Publicity Committee, which sends notices to the media. The Mint Sales Committee began with mint sales at the library and now maintains a gift table with bags, aprons, pencils, cups and notepads. The Friends will have a tent at the Farmer’s Market July 12, Aug. 2 and Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be a one-day book sale at the library Saturday, Sept. 13 and the next regular book sale will be Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 26-28. The sale will be open to members on Saturday, Oct. 25.
