LYNN – Getting into shape doesn’t have to be a grueling experience. That’s the concept behind Zumba, a new form of dance exercise that takes its name from the Colombian word meaning move fast and have fun.”Our first Zumba demo class last week had 40 people and we’re expecting even more,” said Sharon Dobbyn, fitness director at the Greater Lynn YMCA. “It’s a fantastic workout and they really loved it because it’s fun.”The first official Zumba class Tuesday, with Brazilian native Jose Paiva of Lynn as the lead instructor, attracted plenty of enthusiastic dancers. “The class is free to members and non-members can join in the fun for a small fee,” said Dobbyn. “It’ll be offered every Tuesday from 5:15-6:15 p.m.”Zumba was founded by Albert “Beto” Perez, a Miami-based dancer and choreographer. He teamed up with entrepreneurs Albert Perlman and Albert Aghion to take the exercise routine public.Zumba combines Latin rhythms with cardiovascular exercise to create an aerobic routine that is fun and easy to follow.”We utilize the principles of fitness interval training and resistance training to maximize caloric output, fat burning, and total body toning. It’s a way of mixing body sculpting movements with easy-to-follow dance steps,” Perez explained on his Web site, www.zumba.com. “It’s fun and addictive.”Perez said Zumba takes the work out of working out. Dobbyn echoed that conclusion. “It’s a feel-good workout,” Dobbyn said. “And it’s also great for the mind.”Zumba fuses Latin and international music and dance themes suitable for aerobic training, toning and body sculpting. It combines high energy and motivating music with unique moves linked to Salsa, Merengue, belly dancing, Cumbia and Reggae. The end result is a fat-burning workout that strengthens the heart and tones legs, arms, abdomen and glutes.”The first class was mostly women, but as the guys find out about how much fun it is, we’ll be seeing them here as well,” said Dobbyn. For more information about the Zumba class, call the YMCA, 20 Neptune Boulevard, at 781-581-3105.
