SAUGUS – Domenic DiMella will be sworn in as the new Police Chief with pomp and circumstance Monday, but it’s all for show because he was officially handed the keys to his new office Friday. With only a few town officials and some curious residents waiting to attend other business in attendance, Town Clerk Joanne Rappa officially administered the oath of office Friday morning just outside her office.DiMella, dressed in a gray suit grinned broadly, clearly eager to begin his new job.”I’m totally ready,” he said and about 60 seconds later he was chief.Town Manager Andrew Bisignani was the first to try the title on for size when he immediately reached for DiMella’s hand and said “Congratulations, chief,” followed by “Where’s your badge?”DiMella flashed his jacket open to reveal his chief’s badge on his hip.”It’s right here, I already have it on,” he answered.According to Bisignani, DiMella’s position was formalized Friday morning because Chief James MacKay would be officially retired as of midnight. That meant DiMella would start his new job today, but needed the authority to do so.DiMella, 48, was named as MacKay’s successor in June. He is a 19-year veteran on the job and has most recently served as the detective in charge of the department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Drug Unit.DiMella said at the time of his initial appointment that the only possible drawback to his new role is that he would miss being on the streets. He said he hoped to be a cross between a suit and tie-wearing chief who meets regularly with community members and one who still dons a uniform and hits the streets. But he also said he is ready for the transition and Friday made that clear with his eagerness to officially sign the registry and get on with his new job.DiMella will be treated to a ceremonial swearing in on Monday with family members, friends and colleagues on hand in the Town Hall foyer at 2 p.m.
