LYNN – Police confirmed a 48-year-old man was severely injured after being hit by an MBTA bus on Rand Street around 2:30 p.m. Monday.
Police know the man’s identity, but have not released it pending notification of family members, according to Lynn Police Lt. William Sharpe.
Loved ones arrived at the scene a short time after the crash and became visibly upset.
Debris, including clothes and shoes left behind by the victim, remained strewed on the street next to a parked car Monday afternoon.
MBTA Transit Police and Lynn Police questioned the bus driver and numerous passengers on the Route 436 bus, who were ordered to remain on the bus after the accident.
The victim was initially going to be transported by helicopter to a Boston hospital, but for reasons unknown, the helicopter was not able to transport the victim. He has since been taken to Salem Hospital, Sharpe said.
Rand Street is a side street that runs between Chestnut Street and Ford Street. The MBTA bus was taking a detour around Chestnut Street, which is closed in both directions due to construction, according to MBTA spokeswoman Lydia Rivera.
The bus route runs from Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers via Goodwin Circle to Central Square in Lynn.
