LYNN – Police this morning identified the 48-year-old man who was hit by an MBTA bus on Rand Street Monday.
John Pappas of Lynn sustained serious injuries to his legs after being struck by the bus driven by Ceferino Rosa, also of Lynn. He is currently listed in stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.
Loved ones arrived at the scene a short time after the 2:34 p.m. crash and became visibly upset.
Debris, including clothes and shoes left behind by the victim, remained strewn on the street next to a parked car Monday afternoon.
Transit Police and Lynn Police questioned the bus driver and numerous passengers on the Route 436 bus, who were ordered to remain on the bus after the accident.
Pappas was initially going to be transported by helicopter to a Boston hospital, but for reasons unknown, the helicopter was not able to transport him.
Rand Street is a side street that runs between Chestnut Street and Ford Street. The MBTA bus was taking a detour around Chestnut Street, which is closed in both directions due to construction, according to MBTA spokeswoman Lydia Rivera.
The bus route runs from Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers via Goodwin Circle to Central Square in Lynn.
Investigators blocked off Rand Street and kept the bus at the crash scene well into Monday evening.
The accident is being investigated by MBTA Transit Police Detective Lt. Mark Gillespie, Detective Sgt. Kenneth Sprague and Lynn Police Traffic Investigator John Meaney.
