LYNN – A Rock Avenue man was literally drinking and driving when he got into a hit-and-run accident Monday on Union Street, police said.Rene Lopez, 25, of 45 Rock Ave., Lynn, was arrested after police allegedly discovered a half-full bottle of Heineken beer and two empty beer bottles inside his vehicle. It was shortly after 5 p.m. when police say Lopez attempted to parallel park his Toyota 4-Runner outside 199 Union St. and hit a parked car. The owner of the car saw what happened and began to follow Lopez as he tried to get away, police said. The victim called police while following Lopez, who tried to elude the victim by driving “all over the road” onto Essex Street, Joyce Street and back onto Union Street, according to a police report.Police finally pulled over Lopez and realized that in addition to allegedly drinking alcohol while driving, he had a suspended license, attached the wrong license plates to his vehicle and was driving an uninsured vehicle.”I’m not going to lie to you. I had about five beers,” Lopez allegedly said to an officer before he was about to take a field sobriety test.Police said he was failing the test when he said, “I’m going to fail. Why don’t you just arrest me?”They did, and when he got back to the station he allegedly could not remember his birthday when asked.Lopez was arraigned Tuesday in Lynn District Court. He was released on personal recognizance with a possible bail revocation if he violates the terms of his release. Judge Michael Lauranzano ordered him back to court Sept. 26 for a pre-trial hearing.
