Gauvain, Blaney claim rain-delayed Gannon Silver Classic

LYNN – After a week’s wait, the Gannon Silver Classic delivered another finish to remember at Gannon Golf Course.Heavy rains suspended play last Sunday with the leaders having much of their final rounds left to complete. And when the teams returned to the course at 7:15 on Sunday morning, bright sunshine and warm temperatures greeted them. And as usually is the case, the par-5 18th hole proved to be the deciding factor. At 588 yards, it is the longest hole on the course, and on Sunday, Bruce Gauvain birdied it in the next-to-last group to give him and partner Dan Blaney a 2-day total of 18-under par and a one-shot victory over Dennis McKee and Harley Greist.McKee and Greist had a chance to tie for the lead and force a playoff, but a 3-putt on the final green sank their chances.Third place went to Rich Carlton-Clark Morrison, who recorded a 2-day total of minus-15. Dwight Brothers Jr.-Derrick Deluties finished in fourth at 14-under with Frank Andre-Kevin Casilli; John Ricciardelli-Ken Lowry; Whitey LeBlanc-Matt DeBenedictis and Ed Monahan-Jim Phelan sharing fifth at 12-under.Joe Crowley-Pete Rondeau; Ben Friedman-Jerry O’Brien; Bob Trepsas Jr.-Matt Civiello; Gary Hathaway-Brian Hathaway; Dick Aucone-Chris Ofilos and Tom Newhall-Don Foglietta shared ninth at 11-under.The Gannon Ladies Member Guest tournament was held on Saturday. Mary Hunt-Marianne Doane-Ann Dawson-Janet Moran won the gross competition with a score of 4-under par.Peg Burke-Bev Lombara-Joanne Erelli-Chickie Winslow were first in the net competition at 16-under. Linda Corbett-Joanne St. Pierre-Carol Longo-Mo Camissa were second at 15-under.Rhonda McManus-Jan Saulnier-Mary Wakeham-Carol Germano finished third with Jane Fiste-Chris Gould-Dawn Baribeau-Helene Scott in fourth.
