Lynner took matters into hand after woman’s fall

MARBLEHEAD – The daughter of the woman who nearly died after falling 15 feet from Castle Rock on Saturday is grateful that a Lynn man rushed to save her mother’s life, yet became “terrified” that nearly a dozen witnesses did absolutely nothing to help.Catherine Kelly, 50, of Stoneham, climbed the 70-foot-long by 40-foot-high rock with her daughter Jennifer Kelly – as they’ve done several times before – to take in the beautiful scenery behind the 20th century mansion Carcassone when the mother lost her footing trying to climb down.”She hesitated, lost her footing and went over the side,” Jennifer said. “She fell onto the rocks below head-first.”Catherine suffered a fractured skull, broken elbow and broken collarbone after falling onto jagged rocks. As her mother lay facedown in a small pool of water with obvious head trauma, Jennifer became frantic because she was not strong enough to lift her out of the narrow crevasse and Catherine had stopped breathing.”I screamed for someone to help me,” Jennifer said. “Everyone there ran away.”Everyone, except for Mike Remson, 39, of Sunny Side Road in Lynn.”I honestly thought she might have died because her neck was completely crunched and she couldn’t breathe,” Remson said.Jennifer said several people, including a family of four as well as two single men, actually ran away from the scene as she was calling out for help.”Being alone when a family member is hurt is terrifying. It’s terrifying to see people who could be helping running away,” Jennifer said.”There were two people just standing there watching and not calling 911,” she added.Jennifer said Remson, who was enjoying the day with his young daughter, hoisted her mother onto his back and lifted her to safety.”I told my daughter ‘Don’t move’ and I went over and helped her,” Remson said.Remson said he was cautious while moving Catherine due to her head and neck injuries. Typically, it’s unwise to move someone in that condition but Remson said they had no choice so he “cradled” her head.”I don’t think there’s anyway I could express to him how much I appreciated his help,” Jennifer said. “That was really brave and he was very, very nice.”Catherine was released from the hospital Wednesday after spending five days there. She’s still in a lot of pain and will have to miss work for a while.”She’s very thankful,” Jennifer said.Jennifer and Remson rejected the notion that the witnesses who didn’t help did not have cell phone service.”I’m the one who called 911 and my cell phone worked,” she said.”Afterward, I said to myself, ‘What a bunch of cowards,'” Remson said.A fire department captain said Sunday another woman fell from the rock Aug. 3 while viewing the area with a tour group.”If it ever happens again, I hope people might think twice about running away,” Jennifer said.
