SAUGUS-Superintendent Richard Langlois is pulling no punches in his new job, but he is pulling cell phones. In one of his first cost saving measures, Langlois has cut the number of School Department-funded cell phones from 33 to 11.”And I eliminated text messaging,” he said. “It wasn’t necessarily a popular decision, but it’s more fiscally responsible.”Langlois told the School Committee in his first meeting last month that he planned to look into a new cell phone plan. Going with a state-authorized provider, Langlois said he was able to find a plan that not only cut costs but also allows the 11 users who have the phones to pool their minutes.”If you only use one-third of your minutes and I go over mine, it doesn’t affect our plan,” he explained. The other feature Langlois said that will come in handy is the that users will not only be able to e-mail off the phones, but will also be able to tap into the School Department’s student/administrator database giving them access to whatever school records they might need in a hurry. In addition to the new phones, Langlois said he is also looking into a walkie-talkie system that would prove extremely effective in an emergency. Langlois said the particular brand he is looking at are rated higher than cell phones and most other handheld communication devices in effectiveness and could be paramount in keeping communications open during an emergency, such as last year’s lockdown at the high school.Langlois acknowledged that the cell phone savings was small compared to the entire school budget, but he said it is fiscally responsible and the walkie-talkies would be considered a safety issue.”Any changes I make, I make with the safety of the students in mind,” he said.
