NAHANT – It’s an adults-only party but kids in town will reap the benefits. The fifth annual “Mitchell’s Cahnah” Block Party is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 31 from 7-11 p.m., with a rain date Sept. 1.Frank Cardile, organizer of the annual event, said the block party is always popular.”It’s the usual suspects,” Cardile said. “The Tudor Cocktail Ice Company presents the The Cahnah 2008 and the theme this year is Island Mentality.”Cardile said live music will be provided by Reunion, a North Shore-based rock band. This year, proceeds from the event are earmarked for the Nahant Education Foundation (NEF) and other organizations in town.According to its mission statement, the NEF’s purpose is to raise funds from private sources to improve and enrich the Nahant School System. NEF is currently focused on enrichment programs including music, drama, poetry, dance, art and technology for Johnson Elementary School students.”The NEF is the main beneficiary,” he said. “But we will also be making donations to Nahant Little League and Nahant Recreation Commission.”Cardile said the food, lighting, stage and other items needed for the block party are being donated by area residents and businesses, and all the money generated at the event itself would be given to the NEF and other charities in town.”It looks like we’re going to have great weather,” he said. “We’ll be selling food and beverages including the famous Tudor Ice Company cocktails and it’ll be a great time. It’s the final hurrah to summer.”Cardile said admission is free, but the event is a fundraiser so he urged attendees not to bring their own food or beverages.”We are asking people to not bring their own stash,” he said.Cardile said “Island Mentality” t-shirts and low profile ball caps would also be available for purchase at the party.
