PEABODY – With the start of school just four days away, Peabody officials organized a checklist for parents, residents and students to follow in order to experience a safe and happy school year.First on the list is transportation. The city asks that drivers pay close attention to the road once school begins, particularly around school zones where children are more prone to be on the streets. The notice encourages the use of headlights to increase visibility, the utilization of drop-off/pick-up safety zones, and keeping 100 feet between your vehicle and the rear of a bus.Students walking to school are asked to stay on the sidewalks and out of the roadway, and when possible, use crosswalks when making their way to the other side of the street. For those using public transportation, be sure to wait until the bus operator deems it safe to enter or exit, as well as limit the number of carry-on items. Large, bulky objects can be both harmful to the student and the driver if they become projectiles or lodged under the break pedal.Proper preparation for emergencies is also important when children are separated from their families during the long school day.”One of the primary concerns of the Peabody Police Department is the continued safety of our children,” said Police Chief Robert Champagne. “It is important to have a safety plan, and to make sure that your child knows their home phone number and address, the number of their parents’ work and of another trusted adult, and how to use 911.”And, if your child is on medication, make an appointment with the school nurse to go over details prior to the start of school.Going back to school can be a difficult adjustment for many kids, as well, so to help create a smooth transition, the city recommends going for a tour of the school, taking a few practice runs of their travel route, and start building a routine early.”With summer break ending, Peabody parents have the tough task of getting their children back into daily rhythms of school life, including getting up early, going to class, and studying,” said Mayor Michael Bonfanti. To ease the morning rush, prepare for the school day the night before. Complete homework, pack lunch, and choose an outfit before heading to bed.”Please take a moment to review these tips,” said Champagne. “By working together, we can significantly enhance our children’s safety while greatly adding to their physical well being.”Bonfanti echoed that sentiment.”I ask you to engage in your child’s education by holding them accountable for doing homework and working hard to achieve in school,” he said. “I strongly believe that when parents expect children to achieve at high levels, they will rise to the challenge. If they believe they can achieve, they will achieve and nothing will make them or you more proud.”
