SAUGUS-Lorna Cerbone is experiencing something of a new phenomenon: People are calling to thank her.In her role as Recycling Coordinator Cerbone has fielded calls from residents upset about trash pickup or the lack thereof or irate about recycling. She’s also found herself literally up to her elbows in illegally dumped trash and looking for its origin. What Cerbone isn’t used to is people calling to say thank you. But weekly recycling has changed that. The program was instituted June 30 and Cerbone said thus far it has received rave reviews.”I’m getting a lot of positive feedback,” she said. “And people are definitely recycling more.”There is, however, still room for improvement, she added. Cerbone said one problem she is seeing is residents are not separating paper and cardboard from their cans and bottles. While a number of towns have gone to co-mingling recycling bins where everything can be mixed together Saugus has not. Therefore cans and bottles must be placed in one container while paper and cardboard goes in another. The town will be stepping up enforcement as well. When the weekly recycling first began Town Manager Andrew Bisignani warned that items that were obviously recyclable would be left behind by the garbage pick up. State law prohibits communities from picking up clearly recyclable materials such as cardboard boxes, newspapers and the like.Despite those minor snags Cerbone said it is nice to be on the receiving end of a few thank-yous. She is also hoping there might be more good news down the road. With more people recycling it stands to reason the amount of tonnage the town must pay to dispose of will go down. Cerbone said that should net the community a tidy savings.”Hopefully the numbers will reflect that excitement but it’s too soon,” Cerbone said. “We don’t even have the first (quarter) numbers yet.”
