LYNN – A Revere man was arrested Wednesday night after leading State Police on a chase through Lynnfield and Lynn while he was allegedly drunk.Kevin R. Clabby Jr., 49, of 9 Morris St., Revere, was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of liquor (fourth offense), negligent operation of a vehicle, failing to stop for police and other charges.A State Police spokesman said Clabby was driving his 1999 Chevrolet Suburban northbound on Route 1 in Lynnfield when his SUV “significantly” and repeatedly swerved between the middle and left lanes around 10:20 p.m. At one point, the SUV’s left tires drove onto the grassy median, police said.A Trooper activated his lights and sirens after watching the flagrant violation but Clabby allegedly kept going, leading the Trooper on a low-speed chase onto Route 129 into Goodwin Circle in Lynn, according to police. The officer followed the SUV all the way down Lynnfield Street into Wyoma Square when Clabby allegedly ran a red light and took a right turn onto Parkland Avenue, but allegedly began driving on the wrong side of the road after he took the turn.At this point, a second trooper and Lynn Police units provided assistance. One Trooper tried to drive beside the suspect, but Clabby allegedly tried to drive the cruiser off of Parkland Avenue.”The suspect swerved at the cruiser and tried to force the cruiser into a stonewall on the left side of the road,” said Trooper Eric Benson, a spokesman for State Police. The pursuit continued onto Walnut Street, where Clabby allegedly took a right turn and again wound up on the wrong side of the road.He finally pulled over near 573 Walnut, where two Troopers tried to make him exit the vehicle but were initially unsuccessful. The troopers tried to open the doors of the SUV when Clabby refused to step from the vehicle, police said. The doors were locked and a trooper had to smash the window in order to open the door.Clabby still resisted and wouldn’t let go of the steering wheel, police said.”He was forcibly removed from the vehicle,” Benson said.Clabby and a trooper were taken to Union Hospital for minor injuries after the arrest. Benson declined to say exactly how the men were injured, but said it was a result of the struggle.
